Dear Neighbour,
On November 24, 2020, I was sworn in as the Member of the Legislative Assembly
(MLA) for Richmond-Steveston. It was a strange and difficult time for everyone, in
the middle of a global pandemic, and for the first time in BC’s history, MLAs were
sworn in remotely.
It’s been an incredible journey since then and we’ve been through so much together.
I was so proud to be part of a community that had the highest vaccinations rates
against COVID-19 in all of British Columbia. We cared for each other and stepped up
by vaccinating, masking, and staying home when we were sick.
I still see those principles of community care every day in Richmond, from folks
organizing household goods drives to support refugee families, to students taking
climate action, to the community centre societies that build connection and
belonging. There are so many people in so many important roles, that it would be
impossible to name every single one.
However, one thing remains constant, and that is the gratitude I have for all the
change-makers working to make our little part of the world a better place than we
found it. Your service and love of our community is inspiring.
As I come to the end of my four-year term, I reflect on the progress we’ve made
together. In working collaboratively, we created space to have productive dialogue
about our priorities, our fears, and our dreams.
We’ve celebrated progress on the Richmond Hospital Redevelopment project
reaching the end of Phase One. We’ve been worried about climate change and the
impacts on our homes and livelihoods in Richmond, and our government delivered
funds to support climate-emergency projects, raised dyking, and replacement
pump stations. We envision a community where everyone feels safe and welcome,
and hosted Richmond’s first annual Pride Walk, as well as Anti-Hate Security
Funding for enhanced security of religious institutions and community groups that
are targeted by hate.
This is my last community newsletter as your MLA before the election period starts,
although I hope to continue to serve you as MLA for another term.
I believe that when we honour each other’s humanity, when we work together to
achieve great and seemingly impossible things, when we lead with compassion and
love, we will have the future we’ve always dreamed of.
It’s been an honour of a lifetime.
Yours in service,
Kelly
